Budapest is one of Europe’s most romantic and beautiful cities. With grand architecture, dreamy cafés, relaxing spas, and lots of charm, it’s the perfect destination whether you’re staying a week or just passing through. Here are some of the best things to do in Budapest for a magical and memorable trip.

Visit Fisherman’s Bastion

This fairytale lookout spot gives you stunning views of the city and the Parliament building across the Danube River. With white towers and dreamy arches, it feels like something out of a princess movie—especially at sunrise or sunset. If you want to get photos without lots of people in the background, I recommend getting here before 8 am. The tour buses start arriving by 10 am and it gets packed fast. Visiting the Fisherman’s Bastion is usually free, although some viewpoints require payment.

Check Out the National Theatre Memorial

Not far from the National Theatre is a quiet memorial garden with statues and peaceful water features. It’s a thoughtful spot for a short break during your city walk.

Visit One of the Most Beautiful Libraries in the World

The National Széchényi Library is a true hidden gem. With its wooden bookshelves, cozy corners, and old-world beauty, it’s a must-see for book lovers or anyone who appreciates peaceful, historic spaces.

See an Opera (or Take a Tour!)

The Hungarian State Opera House is stunning inside, with golden details and velvet seats. If you’re short on time, take a tour instead of seeing a full show. You’ll still get to admire the beauty of the building without spending your whole evening there.

Get Lost in Books at Massolit Books

Massolit is a charming English-language bookstore filled with cozy chairs, interesting books, and quiet corners. It’s a great place to relax with a tea or coffee and enjoy a slower pace for a little while.

Eat Street Food and Sip a Mocktail at a Ruins Bar

Ruin Bars are one of the coolest parts of Budapest. Built inside old, abandoned buildings, they’re full of art, quirky furniture, and fun vibes. Even if you don’t drink, you can enjoy a mocktail and some tasty street food while people-watching in this creative space.

Have Afternoon Tea

Parisi Restaurant is perfect for a romantic afternoon tea. The setting is dreamy, with gold details, chandeliers, and an old-world feel that makes you feel like royalty. It’s a quiet, elegant way to spend a late afternoon in the city.
New York Café is one of the most famous cafés in the world. The prices are high, and the food is just okay, but the beauty of the place is unmatched—with gold ceilings, live piano music, and the kind of style you only see in movies.
For something just as beautiful with better food and service, try Central Grand Café. It has a romantic and welcoming vibe, and the food is delicious.

Walk Through the Japanese Garden on Margaret Island

Margaret Island is a peaceful park in the middle of the city. The Japanese Garden is especially lovely in spring, when magnolia trees bloom and statues rise up from the water. It’s a calm, relaxing place to go for a stroll and enjoy nature.

Soak at Gellért Thermal Spa

One of the most famous thermal baths in Budapest, Gellért Spa is known for its stunning design and relaxing pools. If you go, bring your own slippers and towel—buying them there can get pricey. Try to arrive early on a weekday (before 8:30 AM) to avoid crowds and enjoy a peaceful soak.

Take a Day Trip to Szentendre

Just 40 minutes from Budapest, Szentendre is a cute and quiet town along the Danube River. It has colorful buildings, art galleries, shops, and cafés. If you’re looking for peace and beauty, this is a great place to visit. Be sure to walk along the street filled with hanging umbrellas—it’s perfect for photos. If you want more excitement, you might prefer a livelier city instead.

Visit Vajdahunyad Castle

This lesser-known castle is located in City Park and looks like something from a fairytale. It combines different architectural styles and has a charming moat and bridge. It’s a lovely place to walk around and take photos.

Climb Up to St. Stephen’s Basilica

St. Stephen’s Basilica is one of the tallest buildings in the city. Inside, it’s peaceful and golden with beautiful stained glass. You can climb to the top for amazing views of Budapest.

Visit Gul Baba’s Tomb

Gul Baba’s Tomb is a quiet and sacred site tucked into the hills of Buda. It’s not very well known by tourists but I think it should be. Gul Baba, a wandering dervish from Turkey was once declared the Wali or protector of Budapest. He is also known as the person who brought roses to Hungary. That’s why there’s a beautiful rose garden across from his tomb.

The property also includes a museum filled with lots of information about Gul Baba and Turkey’s relationship with Hungary. Before you leave make sure to check out their gift shop which is stocked with lots of rose dervided products and the quaint cafe. It’s a great place to pause, reflect, and enjoy a slower moment away from the more touristy attractions.

Budapest is full of charm, history, and hidden gems. Whether you’re reading in a quiet library, sipping tea under a chandelier, this city has something magical for everyone.
