Epic List of Fun Things to Do in Santorini

Santorini is probably one of the most well-known honeymoon destinations. I went solo and still had a great time! The sunsets in Santorini look like something out of a movie. It’s hard to capture the beauty of this place.

Most people are familiar with Santorini’s iconic landscape. The white buildings are made of volcanic ash and cement, and royal blue-domed churches are scattered among residential homes. But there’s so much more to this gorgeous island. If Santorini is on your list, here are some must-do experiences to make your trip memorable.

Things to Do in Santorini: Flying Dress Photoshoot

A Black woman in a red dress doing the Flying Dress in Santorini photoshoot

Did you even go to Santorini if you didn’t do a flying dress photoshoot? Get Your Guide and Viator is one of the best places to find a photographer. Photoshoots run about $180 – 280 dollars. When choosing your guide, make sure to read reviews. Many photographers are popping up, but you want to choose someone local who knows all the rules about where to shoot and can find hidden spots for unique photos. Before you book your Santorini flying dress shoot, make sure to read my tips.

You can also plan your own flying dress photoshoot. You can buy a flying dress on Etsy or rent one.

My Favorite Tour in Santorini: Volcano Catamaran Tour

I recommend booking a catamaran tour that stops at the volcano. Most tours will take you around the island’s caldera, where you can soak in the hot springs, explore hidden coves, and admire the rugged landscape. Many tours offer stops at secluded beaches and provide delicious onboard meals. Make sure to pack a swimming suit and sunblock.

Choose a tour that includes a sunset for the best photos on the island. The view from the boat is even better than the one from Oia. Don’t forget to bring sunscreen!

Watch the Greek Wedding Show Near Fira

If you love theater, you’ll love the Greek Wedding Show. It’s an epic experience that showcases local culture in a fun way. I enjoyed the interactive performance and learned a lot about traditional Greek customs. For example, Greeks smash plates during wedding celebrations and dance all night. It’s one of the most popular laid-back experiences for those who love slow travel.

Go Scuba Diving in the Volcanic Caldera

One of my goals is to scuba dive on every continent. There are a few scuba diving tours in Santorini, but let me set your expectations. The water is very cold, so pack or rent wetsuits to keep you warm. There’s also not a lot of marine life to be found. Transparency is pretty good, though.

Scuba diving in the volcanic caldera is a thrilling way to explore the island’s marine life. Expect to see fascinating rock formations, vibrant reefs, and, if you’re lucky, some unique volcanic creatures. Whether you’re a seasoned diver or trying it for the first time, this experience adds a new dimension to your Santorini adventure.

Take a Cooking Class

I may not be able to spell local Santorini dishes, but I can definitely eat them. As a foodie, I love taking cooking classes and knew I had to take one while in Santorini.

Some popular local dishes are stuffed bird (stuffed zucchini), Sand Smelt Pie, and cod brantada. One Santorini grandmother gives authentic cooking classes from the comfort of her own home. I strongly recommend taking a class from a local nonna.

You can also take classes at local farms or vineyards, where you can pick fresh ingredients and then cook them.

Enjoy a Sunset Tour

The sunsets in Santorini are legendary, and there are plenty of ways to experience them. Whether you watch from the cliffs of Oia, the caldera’s edge, or on a boat, a sunset tour is a must. Some tours even combine wine tasting or a picnic, so you can indulge in local flavors while the sun dips below the horizon, painting the sky in shades of pink, orange, and purple.

Visit the Fira Old Port

Fira’s old port is perfect for my photography lovers. There are cobblestone streets and traditional restaurants, perfect for film shooting. One of the best ways to get there is by taking a scenic cable car ride or walking down the steps (pack water). Once there, enjoy a meal with a view or take a boat ride to nearby islands. The old port is a great place to experience Santorini’s traditional, laid-back vibe before it was made popular by tourism.

Ammoudi Bay

Ammoudi Bay is a little slice of paradise located in the northwest area of Santorini. It is about 300 steps from the Venetian castle in Oia to Ammoudi. Most people go down by foot, but some rent donkeys or drive. There is no parking at Ammoudi Bay.

People come from all over to try their infamous octopus, which you’ll find drying out in the sun most days. There’s also a swimming spot, but it can be hard to find. Wear comfortable shoes, as the stairs to get there can be uneven and very steep.

Kamari Beach

Kamari Beach is known for its black sand and crystal-clear waters, making it one of Santorini’s most popular beach destinations. You can suntan on the beach, swim in the Aegean, or try water activities like windsurfing or scuba diving.

Afterward, explore the restaurants and shops along the shore. There’s also an open-air cinema that costs 10 euros. It’s right across the bus station and opens once it darkens. Many tourists don’t know about this, making it quite a unique experience.

Have a Moonlight Dinner at a Romantic Restaurant

Treat yourself to a moonlight dinner at one of the island’s romantic restaurants, whether solo or with someone special. There are lots of cliffside restaurants to choose from. A few luxurious choices with great views are La Colline Restaurant or Volcano Blue. Enjoy authentic food under the moonlight. I recommend booking a reservation in advance, as good seats go fast.

Santorini is a magical place that lots of tourists have on their bucket list. Make sure to save this list when planning your trip. Santorini has it all if you’re looking for authentic experiences, great food, or relaxation.
