What is the Travel and Adventure Show?
I was scrolling through Facebook when I noticed an event called The Travel and Adventure Show. Based on the photos and itinerary, I knew I had to attend. The expo bills itself as the premiere show for travel enthusiasts, focusing on sharing travel tips, top destinations, and once-in-a-lifetime travel deals.
How do you get to the Travel and Adventure Show 2024?
The Travel and Adventure Show is a traveling expo that visits nine US cities. The Washington DC venue is in the Washington Convention Center, in Chinatown, DC. Downtown DC is a driver’s worst nightmare. The roads are super confusing, and street parking is minimal. The parking garages cost around 25-45 dollars, with the latter being the closest option. Instead of driving, I would suggest taking the metro instead. The nearest metro stops are Mt. Vernon Square/7th Street-Convention Center or Gallery Place-Chinatown metro stain.
How much does the Travel and Adventure Show 2024 cost?
A one-day pass costs about 13 dollars, and a two-day pass costs 20. Food is not included, but there are many food options.
Is the Expo Legitimate and Worth It?
The Travel and Adventure Show is a legitimate travel show. Plenty of adventure sports businesses were in attendance. I saw many scuba diving shops promoting liveaboards, kayaking businesses, hiking companies, and tourist boards. There were also a lot of companies selling “low-cost vacation trips” in exchange for listening to timeshare pitches. I also received local Qatari coffee and could take photos in their traditional dress. Qatar had the best cultural table. I was excited to see the Japanese Tourism table there, but they weren’t very friendly. There was also traditional dance from West Africa, exhibits on slow travel, and much more. I didn’t find the speakers to be very interesting, but I missed lots of the workshops. I think they are geared towards beginner travelers. I would have loved to see more talks about women in adventure travel.
Overall, the expo is legitimate. They pride themselves on being a place where you can get great travel deals, which is semi-accurate. The extreme sports shops did not offer significant deals, but many bargain family package options were available. I can’t speak to the quality of those deals, but I suggest moving cautiously. Overall, it was a cool experience, but it would benefit from more adventure travel vendors and interactive workshops. I would return.
After seeing the new workshops in 2024, I think the panels are worth visiting. If you’re an aspiring travel blogger or creator, you can learn many tips and tricks.
Where to Stay in DC?
Georgetown is one of my favorite DC neighborhoods. Other great neighborhoods in DC are Dupont, Foggy Bottom, and near the Wharf. However, due to safety concerns, I would avoid staying in Chinatown. I recommend booking a hotel in advance because the best rates sell out fast.
