As a Muslim traveler who eats halal, I find Cinque Terre’s endless fresh seafood to be a lifesaver. Finding halal-friendly options in Italy can be a bit of a challenge, but places like Trattoria dal Billy in Manarola are great spots for seafood lovers.
Cinque Terre has a very rich fishing history; it was actually once the biggest employer in the area. Now you can find lots of delicious seafood dishes. I tried fresh sardines for the first time, and it was a very unique experience.
Other popular seafood dishes in Cinque Terre are buridda, Bianchetti al limone, and Sgombri con le cipolle.
Go Snorkeling or Diving in Riomaggiore
Italy has some of the best diving in Europe. Riomaggiore is one of the best villages for snorkeling and diving. It’s common to see mussels, sea snails, and octopuses. In warmer months, anchovies, bluefish, and mackerel are in abundance.
The transparent waters are filled with marine life, but you can also explore underwater caves. Several dive centers in the village offer guided trips for both beginners and experienced divers.
Take a Boat Cruise in Cinque Terre
If I only had time to do one tour in Cinque Terre, it would be a boat tour. The view of Cinque Terre from the sea is magical! Many of these tours offer food, drinks, and a snorkeling stop.
It’s a great way to see all the villages from the comfort of a luxury boat. Many of the boats stop to visit hidden coves and secluded beaches. The waters are closely watched by the Sea Cetacean Sanctuary, which works to protect marine life. During the summer, you may even see dolphins.
Hike the Blue Trail: Sentiero Azzurro
The Blue Trail is a must for outdoor lovers visiting Cinque Terre. It connects all five villages and provides a once-in-a-lifetime hiking experience. You can see breathtaking views of the sea and the colorful cliffside buildings. The trail is moderately challenging and can be a bit more brutal during hot summers.
Wear comfortable shoes and clothes. And, like always, pack all your hiking essentials. To make the most of your experience, I recommend stopping in each village. Use your break to refill your water bottle, eat a snack, and enjoy beautiful views.
Things to Do in Cinque Terre: Join a Cooking Class in Manarola
One of the best ways to learn about a culture is to take a cooking class. Linguria makes the best pesto in Italy, so Cinque Terre is the best place to learn. There are a few different cooking classes to choose from.
You’ll learn how to make traditional Ligurian dishes, like pesto, ravioli dolice, or paniccia, from local food professionals. Once complete, you’ll enjoy a delicious meal, and you’ll also leave with recipes and skills to recreate the flavors of your trip to Cinque Terre.
Relax on the Beach at Monterosso al Mare
Monterosso al Mare is home to the largest and most popular beach in Cinque Terre. I spent a day sunbathing while enjoying delicious fried seafood. The water is clear and very cold. For more of an adventure, consider renting a paddleboard. Once finished, enjoy some tiramisu from one of the nearby cafes.
Fun Things to Do in Cinque Terre: Visit the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Montenero
The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Montenero is located in Riomaggiore. It’s a sacred location for local residents as it is where they used to pray for the Virgin Mary to protect their family members who went away to work long distances from home.
It is used as a peaceful retreat with magnificent views of the coastline and the villages below. The steep hike up to the sanctuary is challenging, but it is well worth it.
Explore the Most Secluded Village in Cinque Terre
Corniglia is the least visited village in Cinque Terre, but it’s also the most unique. It rests atop a cliff and doesn’t have direct access to the sea. It does have a secret swimming hole, but it’s not easy to get there.
It’s one of the best places to beat the crowds. Get lost in its narrow streets and explore local shops and cozy cafés. Be sure to visit the terrace at Santa Maria, which provides one of the most spectacular panoramic views in Cinque Terre.
Watch the Sunset from the Harbor in Manarola
Manarola has some of the best sunsets in Cinque Terre. The harbor is popular with tourists who want to rest and enjoy the small moments. The sunset provides an ethereal glow on the colorful houses near the Manarola harbor. Grab a seat at one of the waterfront bars while sipping on a mocktail aperitivo and watching the sun go down.
