Bovilla Lake
Bovilla Lake is one of the easiest and most rewarding day trips from Tirana, located just about 9 miles (14 kilometers) northeast of the city. Tucked between dramatic mountains and lush green hills, this reservoir offers breathtaking views and a peaceful escape from the urban buzz. The highlight of the trip is the short but steep hike to the Bovilla viewpoint, where you’ll be treated to panoramic vistas of the turquoise lake winding through the valley below. It’s the perfect spot for nature lovers, hikers, and photographers. Bring a picnic, wear sturdy shoes, and be prepared for a little adventureโyouโll feel like youโve discovered one of Albaniaโs best-kept secrets, all within an hour of the capital.

Shkodรซr

If youโre heading north in Albania, donโt skip Shkodรซr. This charming town is incredibly walkable, making it perfect for slow mornings, cafรฉ hopping, and golden-hour strolls through its colorful pedestrian streets. Itโs lively without feeling overwhelming โ the kind of place where you can explore almost everything on foot.
Start your day browsing at Librarie Ora e Shkodrรซs, a cozy local bookstore that feels like a hidden gem. When youโre ready to eat, head to Fisi Grill and Restaurant for a true taste of traditional Albanian cuisine. Itโs a great place to try classic local dishes, and they even offer vegan options, which can be hard to find in more traditional spots.
In the evening, the waterfront restaurants fill up with locals and travelers lingering over dinner and drinks. Taking a stroll near Lake Shkodรซr as the sun sets is easily one of the best ways to end the day. You can also explore Rozafa Castle for panoramic views over the lake and mountains.
Shkodรซr truly has it all โ castles, beautiful lakes, charming town centers, cute restaurants, nightlife, and an easygoing vibe that makes it hard not to fall in love with it.
Berat

I spent four days in Berat, and it honestly felt like stepping into another era. Known as the โCity of a Thousand Windows,โ the white Ottoman houses climb the hillside in perfect rows, their windows stacked so closely together it almost looks like theyโre watching you. From across the river, the whole town feels cinematic โ like a preserved medieval city frozen in time.
Exploring Berat Castle was a highlight. The views over the city are beautiful, but what makes it special is that people still live within the castle walls. Itโs not just a historical site โ itโs a living neighborhood. Inside, youโll also find stunning churches like the Church of St. Mary of Blachernae, adding to the layered, old-world atmosphere.
Four days felt slow and intentional here โ wandering cobblestone streets, soaking in the history, and admiring those endless windows that make Berat so iconic.
Vlore

I only spent 48 hours in Vlorรซ, but it was just enough time to see why people love it. The city has that relaxed seaside energy โ palm trees, sunset walks, and a mix of locals and vacationers enjoying the coast.
Most of my time was spent along the Lungomare Vlore, the long waterfront promenade thatโs perfect for strolling, biking, or just sitting by the sea with a coffee. Itโs especially beautiful in the evening when everyone comes out for their nightly walk.
And I have to mention this: get the lemon ice from the Italian ice truck near the corniche. Itโs simple, refreshing, and exactly what you want after a hot day by the water. Tart, icy, and so good.
Even in just two days, Vlorรซ felt like an easy coastal escape โ laid-back, scenic, and perfect if youโre looking to slow down and soak up Albaniaโs Riviera vibes.
Apollonia

Apollonia is perfect for history buffs, especially those with a passion about Roman culture. Apollonia was once a vacation spot for rich Romans. They would enjoy performances at the 4th century Amphitheater or soak in the ancient Roman baths. Today you can scroll through the ruins or explore the well kept artifacts in the on-site museum.
During the spring you’ll be able to enjoy the flowers and shrubs on the poperty. Don’t forget to visit St. Mary Monastery. If you look well enough, you’ll see faded frescoes among the brick walls.
There’s also a restaurant, but I didn’t check it out.
Gjirokastรซr

I spent a couple of days in Gjirokastรซr, and it felt like walking into a storybook. The town is known as the โCity of Stoneโ because many of the houses have gray stone roofs. The cobblestone streets are narrow and steep, and walking through them feels like stepping back in time.
At the top of the hill is Gjirokastรซr Castle, which overlooks the whole town. The castle is huge and full of history. From the top, you can see the mountains and the valley below. Gjirokastรซr is quiet, historic, and a really cool place to explore.
Theth

Theth is a beautiful mountain village in northern Albania that is perfect if you want to take a break from busy life. It is surrounded by tall mountains, clear rivers, and fresh air that makes you feel calm right away. Phone service can be spotty, so itโs a great place to unplug and enjoy the moment. You can hike to amazing spots like the Blue Eye or Grunas Waterfall, explore nature, and spend time outside without distractions. Theth is peaceful, quiet, and simple, which makes it a great place to relax, clear your mind, and reconnect with yourself and the world around you.
