How to get to Gili Trawangan From Bali

To get to Gili Trawangan from Bali, you typically have two main options: a fast boat from the mainland or a flight. I took the fast boat, but I would take the flight next time.

Fast Boat from Bali to Gili Trawangan

Fast boats are the most common way to reach the Gili Islands from Bali. These boats depart from various ports in Bali, such as Padang Bai, Serangan, or Amed, and travel directly to Gili Trawangan. The journey usually takes around 1.5 to 2.5 hours, depending on the departure point and sea conditions. Several companies offer fast boat services, and you can book tickets in advance through travel agencies, online platforms, or directly at the port.

Flying from Lombak to Gili Trawangan

I recommend taking a flight to Gili Trawangan. It’s less stressful than the ferry and way more comfortable. Take a flight from Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport to Lombok International Airport. From Lombok, you can arrange a transfer to Bangsal Harbor, which is the main departure point for boats to the Gili Islands. I would stay and explore Lombak for a few days, but you can head directly to Gili T.

Once at Bangsal Harbor, you can catch a public boat or charter a private boat to Gili Trawangan. This option takes more time, is more expensive, and is more comfortable.

Hotels in Gili Trawangan

There are a few factors to consider when searching for a hotel in Gili Trawangan. Each individual is different but I would think about your travel style, distance from the ferry, and hotel quality. Gili T is known for being a party island, but it really depends on the season. If you’re a light sleeper consider staying away from the beachfront due to all the bars that stay open until the early morning. If you’re a non-Muslim, I recommend inquiring how far your hotel is from the mosque, as some find the early morning call to prayer to impact their sleep.

Distance From the Ferry

The only way to get around Gili T is by walking, cycling, or horse pulled carriage. If you have a lot of luggage or don’t want to use the horse carriages, you may want a hotel that’s close to the ferry. The roads aren’t luggage-wheel friendly so you’ll most likely have to carry your luggage.

I stayed at Beach House Resort and wouldn’t wish that place to my last enemy but check out other hotels with better reviews.

Gili Trawangan Travel Guide: Things to Do

Swim with the Turtles in Gili T

Gili Trawangan is well known for its abundance of sea turtles. The best time to visit the sea turtles is from dawn to around 9 am. Gili T is a protected marine habitat but unfortunly, the coral reefs aren’t in the best condition. The water is very clear water and there are nesting sites nearby that are cared for by local enviromentalists.

Go Snorkeling at the Underater Scultupres in Gili Trawangan

The highlight of my trip was snorkeling at the underwater sculpture in Gili Trawangan. Bring your own freediving gear and snorkel or rent some. I recommend at least bringing your own snorkel as their equipment was very damaged and unsanitary. You can also take a tour to Gili Meno to visit the infamous Bask Nest underwater sculpture.

Ride A Bicycle

Bikes can be rented for about 4-6 dollars a day. It’s a great way to explore the island. Make sure to ask around at a few bike shops to get the best deal.

Restaurants in Gili Trawangan

Gili Trawangan offers a variety of dining options, catering to different tastes and preferences. While popularity can vary depending on individual preferences and trends, here are a few restaurants on the island that I loved. For a more in-depth review check out this post.

Pizzeria Regina : Best Pizza on the Island

Pizzeria Regina: The Best Pizza in Gili T

I could eat at Pizzeria Regina every day. It’s located a bit from the main road, but it’s worth the trip. Their pizza is better than some pizza spots in Washington, D.C. The crust was perfect. I felt like I was back in Rome, enjoying a personal pie somewhere in Trastevere. Service was terrific, and there was a large TV playing sports games. I tried a few other Italian restaurants in Gili Trawangan, and this was the best.

Samadhi : A Boho Vegetarian Friendly Restaurant

Not only did Samadhi deliver beautiful decor and aesthetic, but their food was delicious as well.

Scallywags Organic Seafood Grill & Bar

Known for its fresh seafood and beachfront location, Scallywags offers a diverse menu featuring locally sourced ingredients and organic produce. Diners can enjoy a relaxed atmosphere with ocean views while trying dishes like grilled fish and fresh lobster.

Coffee & Thyme : A Cozy Cafe

This cozy café is popular for its laid-back vibe and delicious breakfast and brunch options.

Pituq Waroeng

For a taste of authentic Indonesian cuisine, Pituq Waroeng is a popular choice among locals and tourists alike. The restaurant serves traditional dishes like nasi goreng (fried rice), mie goreng (fried noodles), satay, and soto ayam (chicken soup), showcasing the rich flavors of Indonesian cooking.

These are just a few examples of the many dining options available on Gili Trawangan, and exploring the island’s culinary scene can uncover hidden gems and personal favorites tailored to individual tastes.

Is Gili Trawangan Worth Visiting?

It truly depends on the person and circumstances. If you only have less than 2 days, I don’t think the hassle of getting to Gili Trawangan is worth it. You can read my honest, raw, opinion here.

FAQ:

Which Gili Island Should You Visit?

It depends on your travel interests. In general, Gili T is known as the party island but I would rather describe it as the most populated island. Gili Air is much more quiet and there’s not a lot to do other than water activities. Gili Meno is a great island to disconnect from everything.

Which Part of Gili T Should I Stay On?

I didn’t want to use the horses during my stay so I prefereed to stay closer to the port. I recommend staying close to the beach and maximum 15-20 minutes from the port. If you’re a light sleeper chose a hotel away from local mosques and nightclubs.
