Quick Answer on Where to Stay in Santorini

  • Most Expensive: Imerovigli ( 15 minute drive from Oia)
  • Most Affordable: Fira (25 minute drive to Oia)
  • Best Sunset Views: Imerovigli (15 minute drive to Oia)

Imerovigli: The Best Place to Stay in Santorini for Sunset Views

Imerovigli is my personal favorite, and it’s easy to see why. Perched high on the cliffs, this neighborhood offers the very best sunset views on the island. It’s less crowded than Oia, making it a peaceful retreat, especially for honeymooners looking for a romantic escape. The walk from Imerovigli to Fira takes about 20 minutes, giving you easy access to the island’s capital without sacrificing tranquility. The only downside? It’s a bit more expensive compared to Fira or Firostefani, but the serenity and views are worth it.

Oia: Most Popular Santorini Neighborhood

Oia is the postcard-perfect Santorini you’ve seen in every travel magazine. It’s where everyone goes to take their flying dress photos. It’s home to the iconic whitewashed buildings and the views do not disappoint. It’s a top choice for travelers, but it can be very crowded due to the day trippers visiting by cruise ship.

While Oia offers some of the best shopping, dining, and photo opportunities, I found the area to be a bit overwhelming during high tourism season. The amount of tourists hampered my experience. It was hard to take photos and some restaurants was packed. It’s bearable when the cruise ships aren’t there, but you may feel like sardines trapped in a can when they come.

If you’re looking for luxury, stay at the Canaves Boutique Hotel. Make sure to enjoy lunch at Pelikano’s!

Firostefani: Most Affordable Place to Stay in Santorini

If you want stunning views without breaking the bank, Firostefani is your spot. This neighborhood offers a similar vibe to Imerovigli but at a more affordable price. It’s within walking distance to Fira, making it a convenient base for exploring the island. You’ll find plenty of charming cafes and restaurants here, and the views are still spectacular. The downside? It’s not as quiet as Imerovigli, and while it’s close to Fira, it doesn’t have the same level of seclusion.

Fira: Where to Stay in Santorini Without A Car

Fira is the bustling capital of Santorini and the most affordable option among these neighborhoods. It’s a 25-minute drive from the infamous Oia. It’s perfect if you want to be in the center of everything. There are plenty of shops, clubs, and restaurants so it can get a bit busy but its much more spacious than Oia.

Lots of island hoppers choose Fira because its the central hub for transportation. There’s a bus stop that makes traveling throughout the island very easy. The views are still beautiful, but if you’re looking for that Instagrammable Santorini experience, you might want to stay in Oia or Imerovigli and visit Fira for a day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where should I stay in Santorini if I don’t have a car?

If budget isn’t an issue, the best place to stay in Santorini without a car is Oia. Most restaurants and activities are very walkable or include a shuttle. If you’re on a budget, consider staying in Fira.

Can I Get Around Santorini Without a Car?

Yes, you can, but I found the taxis to be a bit expensive. Also, some neighborhoods don’t have easily accessible bus routes. You may save more money by renting a car, but if you’re staying in Oia, a car isn’t 100% necessary.
