Welcome to New York City, the city that never sleeps. As a NYC native, I grew up taking the 2 train downtown with my friends during the summer to explore the city. Millions of people visit NYC each year, but only the locals know how to get the best photos of the DUMBO Manhattan View, the best pizza spots, and fun things to do in DUMBO that aren’t tourist traps. Here is everything you need to know about DUMBO before your visit.

Where is DUMBO?

DUMBO is often written in all caps because its actually an acronym. DUMBO stands for “Down Under Manhattan Brooklyn Overpass” and was coined in the 1970’s by NYC locals in an attempt to slow down impeding gentrification. Currently, DUMBO is one of Brooklyn’s most iconic and photogenic neighborhoods. It’s located along the East River waterfront, and maintains that iconic NYC feel that tourists and locals adore.

If you walk north, you’ll find Brooklyn Bridge Park, a scenic riverside escape perfect for picnics, sunset views, and leisurely strolls. To the west, the legendary Brooklyn Bridge offers a stunning walk into Manhattan, while the charming brownstone-lined streets of Brooklyn Heights lie just to the south. To the east, Vinegar Hill, a historical neighborhood with lots of vintage homes and Irish American history.

How to Get to DUMBO Manhattan Bridge View

The most stress free ways to get to the DUMBO Manhattan Bridge View is by subway or Ferry. My preference is the Ferry if you’re coming from Manhattan because the views are amazing and unique. Once you get off the Ferry, you’re less than a 5 minute walk to the view. If you’re in a rush or coming from longer distances, the subway is probably going to be the quickest and most efficient way of arriving. Street parking is extremely hard to come by, and parking garages can be a bit expensive so I do not recommend driving. Ubers usually also come with an additional $7 congestion fee + heavy taxes.

Fun Things to Do In DUMBO

Arabica

Arabica probably has the best angle of the DUMBO Manhattan Bridge View. And to make things better, the have one of the best Spanish Lattes in the city. I ordered a pecan cinnamon roll and it was delicious. The lines move quickly but seating is limited. If you crave ice cream head to Van or Brooklyn Ice Cream factory next door.

TimeOut Market DUMBO

TimeOut Market DUMBO makes it so easy to try food from some of NYC’s most chefs. You can find fresh Thai food, scrumptious paella, and BBQ. Some popular restaurants are Doughnuttery, FELICE Pasta Bar, and Jacob’s Pickles for perfect fried chicken. Like other TimeOut Markets, they also host lots of events. Some days you’ll find live jazz music, Salsa classes, and even story time readings for children.

Jane’s Carousel

If you’re visiting DUMBO with children, then you may want to check out Jane’s Carousel. It’s a vintage carousel overlooking the Brooklyn Bridge. It is covered, so you can visit when its raining or snowing. Lines can get busy on the weekend so plan accordingly.

Usagi

Usagi is an art studio, market, and coffee shop. I ordered the yuzu tea and it was absolutely delicious. Their hot food isn’t available all day. I believe it closes before 4 pm. They do have some limited pastries available. The art studio is quite small, and not extremely engaging. Their market has some cute dining ware and bags. Customer service is okay but could be better.

Jacques Torres for hot chocolate

The staff here make you feel so welcome and comfortable. This was definitely the highlight of my trip. There are so many amazing chocolate bon bons, truffles, and brittle to choose from. The Parisienne decor made you feel like you just hopped off a plane in France. The pecan bark had a kick to it, but you can’t go wrong choosing anything here. It’s perfect for a date night or Valentine’s Day gifts.

Brooklyn Bridge Promenade

The Brooklyn Bridge Promenade is one of the most iconic walkways in New York City, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the Manhattan skyline, the East River, and the Statue of Liberty. Stretching above the traffic lanes of the Brooklyn Bridge, this elevated wooden pathway is a favorite among both tourists and locals, providing a scenic and leisurely route between Brooklyn and Lower Manhattan. Whether you’re walking, biking, or simply pausing to take in the views, the promenade is an unforgettable experience, especially at sunrise or sunset when the city is bathed in golden light. Along the way, you’ll see historic plaques, love locks attached to the railings, and countless photographers capturing the magic of this legendary structure. 🚶‍♀️🌉✨ #BrooklynBridge #NYCViews #IconicNYC
