New York Skyscrapers behind Manhattan Bridge

Have you ever had a flight that involved transferring between NYC airports, like JFK, to LGA? It can get a bit hectic, but as a native New Yorker, I’ll show you how to do it in the least stressful way. I’ve transferred from JFK to LGA a few times, so I know the best ways to plan your trip. Sometimes, it can save you a lot of money on flights.

Quick Answer: If you’re pressed for time, arranging a car service would be the best way to transfer between NYC airports.

What is the best way to Transfer from JFK to LGA or EWK within 5 hours?

First things first, this is NOT the time to go sightseeing. New York City traffic can be horrific, so you’ll need all the time you can get. There are a few different ways to transfer between JFK, LGA, and EWK. The most stress-free way is to book a private transfer, but there are a few more budget-friendly ways. I’ll go over the various ways in this guide to transfer between JFK, LGA, and EWK.

Map of New York City Airports

There are three major airports in New York City: LaGuardia Airport, John F. Kennedy Airport, and Newark Liberty International Airport. Newark Liberty International is in New Jersey, but it’s only a quick train ride to New York City. Here is a map of the NYC airports.

Transferring Between LaGuardia to JFK

Although LaGuardia Airport is only 10 miles from John F. Kennedy Airport, it can take an hour or more during rush hour. As a New York native, LaGuardia Airport is one of my least favorite airports. Construction has been going on since I received my first passport almost 20 years ago. And don’t get me started on how understaffed LaGuardia is.

Shuttle From LGA to JFK and Vice Versa

There are lots of independent shuttles between LGA and JFK. IF you’re looking for a shuttle train that goes between JFK and LGA and vice versa, that has been discontinued.

Transferring Between EWR to LGA

Transferring between EWR and LGA is a headache if you have limited time. They are 33 miles apart and involve a toll road and bridge. If you’re traveling during rush hour or afternoon traffic, it will take over an hour. However, if you’re traveling in the early morning or very late at night, it’s doable. I recommend booking an airport transfer early in advance.

Transfering Between LGA, JKF, and EWR By Train

New York Subway Train at the Platform

I do not recommend transferring between LaGuardia Airport, John F. Kennedy International Airport, and Newark Liberty International Airport by train if you have limited time. There is no direxr train service between the airports and one train delay can ruin your entire trip. However, if you’re more flexible on time, you can save a lot of money by taking the train.

From LaGuardia Airport, you can take the Q70 bus to the Jackson Heights-Roosevelt Avenue subway station, and then you can catch the E, F, M, or R trains to Penn Station. From there, you can transfer to either the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) or the New York City Subway to reach Penn Station or Jamaica Station, which offer connections to trains to JFK and EWR.

To travel from JFK to EWR or vice versa, you can take the AirTrain JFK to Jamaica Station, where you can transfer to the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) to reach Penn Station. You can take NJ Transit or Amtrak trains from Penn Station to Newark Liberty International Airport Station.

Overall, while transferring between LGA, JFK, and EWR by train is possible, multiple transfers can be time-consuming. A taxi, rideshare service, or private car service may be a more convenient option, especially if you’re short on time or traveling with luggage.

To get from Penn Station to LaGuardia Airport, you can use Get Transfer. It provides direct transportation between Penn Station and LaGuardia Airport. If you’re on a budget, you can take the subway from Penn Station to the Roosevelt Avenue-Jackson Heights station (via the E, M, or R train) and transfer to the Q70 Select Bus Service directly to LaGuardia Airport.
