Visiting the Historic Rosemont Manor is a must for anyone who loves Afternoon Tea, historical homes, and charming small towns. I had an amazing time and would definitely recommend it as a unique thing to do in Northern Shenandoah Valley. Visit during one of their Afternoon Tea sessions or book a stay at their on-site bed and breakfast.

The Love Story Behind Rosemont Manor
There’s a beautiful love story behind Rosemont Manor. John S. Mosby fell in love with a rich man’s daughter named Elizabeth. Mosby came from humble begingings and was afraid that her father would decline his proposal. Instead, Elizabeth’s father accepted Mosby with one condition: he had to build Elizabeth a house. And in 1811, the house was completed.
The couple shared a deep bond, reflected in their dedication to the manor and their family. Tragically, Elizabeth passed away in 1853, leaving John heartbroken. His grief was palpable, and he often expressed that the love they shared was the most profound aspect of his life. Despite this loss, John continued to maintain the estate and its legacy, with their love story remaining a poignant part of its history.
Over the years, Rosemont has served as a backdrop for various romantic tales, including the subsequent lives of its later owners and their families, each adding layers to the manor’s enchanting narrative. Today, the estate stands not only as a historical landmark but also as a symbol of enduring love and connection.
History of Rosemont Manor
Rosemont Manor has a rich history. Although it was originally constructed in 1811 by Colonel John S. Mosby, it has served many different purposes through the years. It was once a prominent site during the American Civil War, notably being used as a hospital for wounded soldiers following the battles of Cedar Creek and Cool Spring in 1864. The manor’s location made it a common stopover for both Confederate and Union forces.
Throughout its history, Rosemont has welcomed numerous notable figures, including multiple presidents, foreign dignitiaries, and even the Confederate cavalry commander John Mosby, who was a cousin of the manor’s original owner. The estate’s storied past, marked by its role in pivotal moments of American history, continues to attract visitors interested in its legacy and the stories of those who shaped it.
Afternoon Tea at Rosemont Manor
The afternoon tea experience at Rosemont Manor is definitely in my top 3 favorite afternoon teas in the DC area. The grounds are gorgeous but the tea?! She’s the star of the show. Their afternoon teas are usually on the weekend but they sell out fast! Make sure to book in advance here.
We received three courses, lots of tea, and some of the best apple cider I’ve ever had in my life. The tour starts off with a quick introduction to the estate, including lots of historical facts. Afterwards we walk over the main house where the afternoon tea takes place. It’s very intimate, but not over-crowded. We received three different teas including 1 Black tea, a fragrant green tea, and a pumpkin roobios. They’re available for purchase afterwards if one catches your fancy.
The servers were amazing and kept our tea glasses full. I forgot to ask for non-pork options in advance but they quickly found me a replacement.
The first round was full of savory dishes like artichoke bites and cucumber sandwiches. Afterwards, we all received 2 scones. One was a sweet and pumpkin flavored while the other was made with cheese and herbs. The savory scone was my favorite! For dessert we had a nice array of options. There were brownies in the shape of a bat, pumpkin mousse, and this mouth watering apple crisp that I still think about today.
The menu was slightly vegetarian friendly but definitely call in advance if you have any dietary restrictions.
Weddings at Rosemont Manor
The Historic Rosemont Manor does about 100 weddings a year. There’s also hotel rooms available on the property if guests would like to stay overnight. We visited during a wedding and everything seemed very well organized. There are so many beautiful places to take photos on the property. I’m sure it would work well as a summer, winter, fall, or spring wedding venue.
Rosemont Manor Bed and Breakfast
The rooms at Rosemont Manor have a very gorgeous vintage charm about them. Each room is named after a historical figure include spacious beds and some have amazing views of the property. The rooms are painted in very regal colors of burgundy, gold, and yellow. I fell in love with the wallpaper but the some of the bathrooms have clawfoot tubs. Others have more modern showers. You’ll need to look at the photos of each room to ensure you pick a good one. Some were a bit small and on the plain side.
