What Type of Things To Buy at the DC Holiday Market

Red and Blue Lego Minifig

Now, I have to be honest. There has been some negative feedback about the items available at the Holiday Market. Your holiday favorites probably include apple cider donuts, churros, and roasted nuts; and you’ll definitely find them there. But we want to see more holiday-inspired items. Many vendors sell average clothes and holiday knickknacks but lack the special je ne sais quoi that other European markets have.

On a brighter note, I have seen many jewelry and winter accessories, such as hats, scarves, and gloves. My favorites are the holiday-inspired home decor. Who can say no to a cozy blanket?

Activities at the DC Christmas Market

There are a lot of fun things to do at the DC Holiday Market. It’s common to hear live Christmas music and all your favorite holiday songs while exploring the market. You can also experience live music from go-go, rock, jazz, soul, country, and contemporary artists.

Occasionally, Santa Claus makes an appearance, offering children, adults, and pets the opportunity to take photos.

Some vendors offer DIY workshops or crafts you can participate in, like ornament decorating or creating your own holiday cards. If you’re looking for a budget-friendly activity, you can look at all of it with sparkly lights and holiday decorations, making it an ideal spot for festive holiday photos.

ARTECHOUSE is a market partner that offers an immersive reality experience for market visitors. Kimpton Hotel Monaco DC is the official hotel partner, and it happens to be next door to the market. Visitors can enjoy outdoor fire pits.

Other Famous Christmas Markets in Washington DC

Washington, D.C. has several Christmas markets and the Downtown DC Holiday Market. Make the best of the season by visiting a few different ones. I find that smaller markets tend to have more unique options. Here are some of the other popular holiday markets you can visit:

Christkindlmarkt at Heurich House Museum:

This Christmas market is located at the Heurich House Museum in Dupont Circle. It’s inspired by traditional German Christmas markets and showcases local artisans selling handmade crafts, artwork, and holiday decorations. The Christkindlmarkt at the Heurich House Museum is a beloved holiday tradition in Washington, D.C., offering a unique blend of history and festive cheer.

Held on the grounds of the historic mansion, this European-style Christmas market celebrates local artisans and craftsmen, featuring handcrafted gifts, holiday décor, and art. Guests can explore the beautifully decorated museum, once home to German-American brewer Christian Heurich, while enjoying festive treats like mulled drinks and German-inspired delicacies.

Eastern Market Holiday Market

Eastern Market transforms into a holiday wonderland, with local vendors offering seasonal foods, unique crafts, clothing, and accessories. It’s a very popular market during the winter, and finding parking can become a bit stressful on a busy day.

Holiday Market at The Wharf

Set along the waterfront, this market includes local vendors offering holiday goods, crafts, and seasonal treats. The Wharf’s decorations and waterside views add a special touch, along with activities like ice skating. I recommend visiting on December 7th for the Wharf Holiday Boat Parade.

Each market offers its unique selection of vendors and holiday experiences, making D.C. a fantastic place to shop for the holiday season.
