Struggling to figure out if you should fly into Dulles or Reagen Airport? As a DC resident, I’ve picked up many family and friends from the airport to know the best airport to choose.

Three airports serve the Washington, DC, area, and I’ve flown out of all three. They are Dulles International Airport (IAD), Ronald Raegan Airport (DCA), and Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI).

Which Airport is Closest to Washington DC?

When planning a trip to Washington, D.C., one of the key considerations is choosing an airport closest to the downtown attractions. Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) is the nearest and most accessible option. Located just 4 miles south of downtown D.C., DCA is a convenient and quick option for travelers. A 10-minute drive or a short Metro ride via the Yellow or Blue lines can get you from the airport to the heart of the nation’s capital. This means less commuting and more time exploring the iconic landmarks, historic sites, and vibrant neighborhoods that make D.C. one of the most visited cities in the world.

Airline Availability and Pricing

The three primary airports serving the Washington, D.C. area—Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA), Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD), and Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI)—each offer a range of flight options. Still, they differ significantly in their flight options and destinations.

Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD)

IAD typically offers the most flight options, especially for international travel. As a central hub for United Airlines, IAD provides plenty of domestic flights and a wide array of international routes, making it a much-loved airport for North American and global destinations.

Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA)

DCA primarily handles domestic flights with some limited international options to Canada, the Caribbean, and Mexico. While DCA has a high frequency of flights, most are domestic and short-haul flights. Tts range is somewhat restricted compared to IAD and BWI due to perimeter rules that significantly limit long-haul flights.

The perimeter rule ensures that planes flying out of DCA are usually only allowed to fly to places less than 1,250 miles away. This helps manage the number of flights and keeps things running smoothly at the airport. However, there are a few exceptions, like Los Angeles, Seattle, and Canada, Some flights can go farther, but most have to follow the rule.

Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI):

BWI is also an international hub offering many flights, with a strong focus on domestic routes. It is a central hub for Southwest Airlines, contributing to many domestic flights and low-cost options. BWI also provides some international flights, which are less extensive than IAD but usually a bit more affordable.

The Final Verdict: IAD vs DCA vs BWI

I’ll always prefer flying from Ronald Raegan because of it’s location but I have no problem heading to IAD for international flights. The lounges at IAD are much better, especially if you have a Priority Pass Membership. Due to the distance, BWI is my last choice, but their airport is lovely and if you’re staying in Baltimore or certain cities in Maryland, it may be a good choice for you.
