Knowing what you can’t do in Dubai will save you a lot of stress. I’m one of those people who do extensive research before visiting a country. I love learning about different cultures, and I respect the cultures of places I visit. I don’t believe in committing public protests in foreign nations because I do not want to end up on Locked Up Abroad. I’m way too cute and have too many dietary restrains. So, if you’re like me, remember these things before heading to Dubai.
Things to Know Before Visiting Dubai
Dubai is one of the seven emirates in the United Arab Emirates. Religion and reputation play a large role in the laws of Dubai. Interestingly enough, Dubai is the least conservative Emirate but you should still be very mindful. It’s one of the safest countries in the world for solo women as long as you abide by their rules.
I find some of the rules to be very protective of women. For example, it is illegal to curse at a woman in public or to spread lies about a woman online. You could use some of that in the USA.
Here are a few rules you should know before visiting Dubai
- Do not bring vibrators or sex toys into the country. It is illegal.
- Don’t be publicly drunk. It is socially frowned upon and illegal.
- Do not be open about being queer. Although there are queer people everywhere, Dubai is not the place to be open about your sexuality or identity.
- Do not buy or bring drugs into the country. Check in advance if you need to declare some prescription medication.
- Don’t use foul language in public or online. You can go to jail for using foul language on a social media post.
- Do not disrespect or mock the royal family or any political leaders.
- Do not disrespect or mock Islam or modesty.
- Do not use your left hand to greet someone. In some cultures, the left hand cleans oneself after using the bathroom.
- Do not participate in lots of PDA in public.
- Do not eat in public during Ramadan unless you are a place for tourists.
- Do not touch people you don’t know. In the Muslim community, some women and men do not believe in shaking hands with the opposite sex, so don’t be offended if someone ignores your handshake.
- Do not argue or touch police officers or government employees (or anyone, honestly)
- Do not show a lot of cleavage or wear short clothes. You may not go to jail for certain outfits, but you may get annoyed looks or propositions.
- Leave all the stereotypes behind and get ready to visit one of the funniest places in the world.
