The Bon Air Park and Rose Garden Memorial is one of Arlington’s best-hidden gems. Located 20 minutes from Washington, DC, this park includes an English-style garden and is a beautiful way to spend a low-key afternoon. I love bringing a book and coffee to the park to recharge and connect to the small moments.

In addition to the Rose Garden Memorial, the park has a playground, picnic tables, and a small stream. It’s often used for weddings, baby showers, and other events.

The History of Bon Air Rose Garden: Arlington’s First Public Garden

Nellie Broyhill was a force to be reckoned with. She was born in the Appalachian mountains of North Carolina and moved with her family to Arlington in 1937. It was the middle of World War II and a somber time for all Americans. Most families had lost someone, and women wanted to honor those who had served. Inspired by a magazine, Nellie Broyhill decided to honor World War II veterans with a living garden instead of the more common concrete memorials.

As a flower enthusiast, she already had extensive garden experience. For financial support, she reached out to local churches and notable women, such as the Grand Duchess of Luxembourg. The Rose Garden became available to the public in 1951 and was later moved to its current location in 1964.

When To Visit: Rose Bloom Season in DC

On average, DC’s roses bloom around late May to early June. However, this varies yearly based on weather conditions and rose type. Some roses bloom through the summer and into early fall, with some looking their best in September and October. I recommend visiting a few times each season to see what you’ll find.

Visiting the Bon Air Rose Garden felt like escaping into a Jane Austen novel. There are English-style garden pavilions, rows of roses in every color, and specially designed benches. Even though there were visitors, it was very quiet and peaceful.

It gets extremely hot during the summer, but you’ll find a few shaded benches throughout the garden. Make sure to pack lots of water to stay hydrated.

After enjoying the park, head to The Ritz-Carlton, Pentagon City for Afternoon Tea.

Bon Air Park Playground

Bon Air Park has something for everyone. Children can enjoy the swings, slides, and ample green space. It’s located less than 2 minutes from the rose garden. There’s also a grill nearby, making it perfect for special occasions. Plus there’s lots of parking nearby!

If you feel like adding some romance to your life, check out Bon Air Rose Garden. You won’t regret it!
