Are you a book lover hoping to get lost in a bookstore in Washington DC? We have tons of beautiful bookstores in DC and Northern Virginia. With so many local booklovers, it’s hard to find an empty bookstore. You’ll find students, bookworms, and writers all across the city enjoying a good book and coffee. We have all sorts of niche bookstores from the African-centered Sankofa, to the region’s only Romance bookstore, Friends to Lovers.

Friends to Lovers

Easily one of the cutest bookstores in the DMV, Friends to Lovers made history when it opened the first romance bookstore in the region. Their shelves have romantasy, classics, and much more. There’s a small seating area that you can use to read a few pages and lots of bookmarks and accessories to choose from. Afterwards you can walk a block over for ice cream and dessert or explore other fun things to do in Old Town Alexandria.

Sankofa Video Books & Café

Sankofa is my favorite bookstore in Washington DC! I first discovered while a student at Howard University. The bookstore is owned by the legendary filmmaker Haile . It has become a hub for African-centered books. Sankofa also has a café attached serving both vegan and non-vegan options. My favorite is the Sankara salad. Yes, all their dishes are named after famous revolutionaries. You can buy a book online or in person. If they don’t have the book, they will usually order it for you and it comes in no time.

Politics and Prose at The Wharf

Politics and Prose has multiple locations in the DC metro area. The one at the The Wharf is spacious and features an café that serves coffee, baked goods, and light refreshment. Politics and Prose is known for its community events, so check the calendar for author readings and discussions.

MahoganyBooks: Popular Black Owned Bookstore in DC

MahoganyBooks is a Black -Owned shop that focuses primarily on African American literature, but offers a wide selection of genres. While it doesn’t have an in-store café, it often hosts book discussions and author events that make for a lively literary experience. It’s also located close to a few cafes and restaurants. Afterwards, walk along the National Harbor or take a ride on the ferris wheel. It’s perfect for a date night.

Little District Books

This LGBTQ+ bookstore offers a carefully curated selection of books in a welcoming environment. Although Little District Books doesn’t serve food or drinks, its close proximity to Eastern Market means there are plenty of nearby local food vendors and cafes.

BusBoys and Poets

This bookstore and restaurants is a one stop shop filled with diverse literature, art, and amazing. It’s a progressive space that hosts poetry nights and other cultural events. I’ve never had a bad meal here. They have gluten free, vegan, and halal options. Busboys and Poets is a DC staple

East City Bookshop

Located near Capitol Hill, East City Bookshop has a cozy atmosphere and a strong sense of community. Though there’s no café, the store frequently hosts book clubs, writing workshops, and author readings.
