Looking for things to do in Harpers Ferry? This charming town is a hidden gem. It’s about an hour from Washington, D.C., but it couldn’t be any different. Personally, it’s one of my favorite cities in the area and makes for the perfect day trip or weekend getaway.
People visit to walk in the footsteps of early Americans and enjoy West Virginia’s rich history. You can visit any time of the year because of all the outdoor activities, hiking trails, and museums.
History of Harper’s Ferry
Harpers Ferry makes it into the History books because of John Brown. Brown was firmly against slavery and helped enslaved people escape from the South as a job as a railroad conductor. In 1859 John Brown led a raid to seize the federal armory. His goal was to obtain arms to spark a slave rebellion. Although his rebellion was considered unsuccessful at the time, it was later described as one of the early demonstrations that led to the Civil War.
Harpers Ferry is also known for being a place where you can see three states simultaneously. You can see where the three states meet by hiking the Maryland Heights Trail or by the location in the photo above.
How to Get to Harpers Ferry
You can get to Harpers Ferry by car or Amtrak. The car ride is about 1 hour and 15 minutes. It’s a fun ride and becomes more beautiful the further you get from the city. Taking the Amtrak is also a solid choice with lots of pros. First, taking the train is a romantic and sustainable travel method. Second, Parking can get crowded on major holidays, so you won’t need to get there early to ensure you have a spot.

Parking at Harpers Ferry
Parking in Harper’s Ferry can be a bit of a challenge, especially during peak tourist seasons. The town itself is small, and parking is limited within the historic district. However, there is a designated parking lot at the Harper’s Ferry National Historical Park, located a short distance from the main attractions.
From the lot, a convenient shuttle service takes visitors directly into the heart of the town. The shuttle runs regularly and is a great way to avoid the hassle of finding parking in the narrow, busy streets. You can also walk, but it’s about 1.5-miles from the parking lot into town. I recommend arriving by 7 am on weekends and holidays, as the parking lot can fill up quickly!
How Much Does it Cost to Visit Harpers Ferry?
The car entrance fee is $20 and includes three days of park access. The fee for those arriving on foot or bike is $10 per person.
If you have the America the Beautiful Pass, you get free access to Harper’s Ferry and more than 2,000 federal recreation sites nationwide. The pass is worth it if you do a lot of hiking or outdoor activities.
Day Trip: Fun Things to Do in Harpers Ferry
Harpers Ferry is the perfect weekend getaway or quick day trip! If you love the outdoors and history, you will not be bored. During the summer you can do water activities like rafting or kayaking. During the fall, you can enjoy seeing the leaves change color or drinking hot chocolate at Alstadts Ale House. If you’re planning a weekend getaway to Harpers Ferry, please save add these attractions to your list.
Visit John Brown’s Fort
John Brown’s Fort should be your first stop in Harpers Ferry. This is where John Brown executed his famous raid. Unfortunately, his plans were thwarted, but the fort has been preserved as a powerful reminder of the fight against slavery. It’s doesn’t take long to tour but you can explore the fort while learning about American history.
Hike to Maryland Heights For Gorgeous Views
Maryland Heights is my favorite trail in Harpers Ferry. It’s a steep and moderate-strenuous hike, but the views make it all worth it. You’ll be able to see where the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers meet. The trail can be challenging in parts, but the reward at the top is well worth it. Be sure to bring your camera, but no drones, as they aren’t permitted. Don’t forget to bring enough water and snacks so that you stop and rest at the overlook. There are no bathrooms along the trail.
Take a Ghost Tour
If you’re in the mood for something a little spooky, sign up for a ghost tour of Harper’s Ferry. The town’s long and turbulent history has inspired many local ghost stories. These tours, often held in the evenings, guide you through the haunted corners of town, sharing eerie tales of Civil War soldiers and other long-lost souls. It’s an interesting (and fun!) way to learn more about the town’s past.
Locals have shared numerous stories about seeing a woman they call Screaming Jenny. According to local legend, she was unlived while trying to warm herself by the fire, causing her to let out a scream that the entire neighborhood could hear.

There are lots of cute, local owned shops in Harpers Ferry. You can buy locally brewed coffee, candy, and t-shirts. One of my favorite shops is Tenfold Fair Trade Collection, a gift shop with lots of handmade items. I also love Vintage Lady for handmade jewelry and dainty gifts.
Go Whitewater Rafting
If you’re visiting in the warmer months and looking for adventure, try whitewater rafting on the Shenandoah and Potomac Rivers. There are several local businesses offering guided trips, making it perfect for beginners or more experienced rafters. The rapids are mild and you’ll be surrounded by the beauty of West Virginia mountains. It’s a exciting way to experience the area’s natural beauty from a completely different perspective.
