Are you struggling with what to add to your packing list for Iceland? Well, this is the perfect guide for you! This detailed Iceland Packing List guide explains what to bring for a trip to Iceland, including the best warm clothing, outdoor hiking gear, cameras, and more items that you won’t want to forget. The hardest part about planning my trip to Iceland during winter was what to pack. I expected blizzard-like conditions and powdery snow. As someone with Caribbean roots, I was out of my league. After hours of research and a two-week trip full of adventure, I have created the perfect packing list to make your trip stress-free.

The most important thing to think about while crafting your packing list is the weather and season. This packing list includes items for both summer and winter.

Iceland Packing List For Winter

Iceland’s winter starts between September and April when it’s more likely to see the Northern Lights. In Reykjavik, winter temperatures typically range from 33 to 35°F (1 to 2°C), while summer temperatures average around 54°F (12°C).

Layers are essential to survive winter in Iceland. You’ll want to pack thin sweaters and puffer vests so that you can feel comfortable outside and indoors. You’ll probably visit multiple locations, so make sure your pants are comfy enough for long drives. Waterproof gloves, hats, and warm socks are essential. I would also pack a few pieces of loungewear for your hotel stay. I found the indoor heating extremely drying, so don’t forget your skincare essentials.

If you plan on hiking and participating in outdoor activities, make sure to bring the correct footwear, bags, and supplies as Iceland can become a bit pricey.

Iceland Packing List for the Summer

Iceland’s summer runs from June to August. Expect milder temperatures and extended daylight hours, perfect for exploring the country’s stunning landscapes or swimming between two tectonic plates. In Reykjavik, summer temperatures average around 54°F (12°C), so still pack layers.

  • Here are the top essentials to pack when visiting Iceland during summer:
  • thin sweaters
  • bathing suit and snorkeling gear
  • long-sleeve shirts
  • puffer vests
  • lightweight, waterproof jacket
  • waterproof hiking boots, a good backpack, and necessary hiking supplies
  • insect repellent

With the right packing list, you’ll be well-prepared to enjoy Iceland’s breathtaking summer scenery and make the most of your adventure.

Doing Laundry in Iceland?

Doing laundry in Iceland is extremly easy. Most hotels and Airbnb rentals, offer laundry services either on-site or nearby. There are a few laundromats in larger towns and cities like Reykjavik and Akureyri, but you’ll need cash or coins.

If you plan on doing Van Life in Iceland, many campsites have laundry facilities. I recommend bringing travel-sized detergent and a reusable dryer ball. But if you forget you can always stop at a grocery store to buy some.

One load of laundry can cost almost $20 so its more expensive than most places in America, but you’ll save money doing your own laundry rather than paying your hotel to do it.

  • The Laundromat Cafe : There’s an actual cafe upstairs so that you can grab a treat while waiting for your laundry to finish drying.
  • Laundromat Wash: Detergent is free with every wash.
