Looking for fun things to do in Northern Virginia? I’ve been living in Alexandria for the past four years, and I love this area! It’s quieter than DC, but it still has many things to do. If you’re interested in history, the outdoors, or cozy small towns, Northern Virginia has something for you. Plus, unlike DC, you can actually find parking *wink*. Here are some fun things to do in Northern Virginia.

Indoor Skydiving at iFLY Loudoun

If you’re an adrenaline junkie looking for unique things to do in Northern Virginia, you have to check out iFly Loudoun. I’m not ready to jump out of a plane, so it is perfect! It’s an indoor skydiving experience perfect for families. Make sure your hair can fit under the helmet comfortably or you will not be able to fly. Overall, I loved the sensation of freefalling in a safe and controlled environment with my guide.

Explore the Quaint Town of Occoquan

Occoquan is a cute small town in Northern Virginia. This small, historic town has charming shops, art galleries, and cozy cafes. There is even a small waterfall along the river. History lovers enjoy the Mill House Museum, while outdoor lovers can kayak or dive on the Occoquan River. If you’re addicted to coffee like me, visit the Secret Garden Cafe for pastries and coffee!

Exploring the Gardens of Chatham Manor in Fredericksburg

Did you know that in the 1800s, pineapple-shaped sculptures at your home’s entrance signified that you owned a distinguished estate?

Chatham Manor is a beautiful Georgian mansion with a rich history dating back to the 18th century. It was originally built by a farmer and legislator,  William Fitzhug. Throughout the years, the manor served as a hospital during the Civil War and hosted several American presidents, including Thomas Jefferson and Abraham Lincoln.

The grounds are lovely for a morning walk, and the views of the Rappahannock River are breathtaking. It’s a fantastic spot for history and garden buffs.

You might not think of beaches when you think of Northern Virginia, but there are some great spots to soak up the sun. Aquia Landing Park is a small but cute beach perfect for swimming or picnics. Make sure to go there early to find a good spot. You can also check out nearby Rehoboth or Dewey Beach.

Enjoy Afternoon Tea at Lady Camellia

Lady Camellia is a small but quaint cafe in Old Town Alexandria. Their Afternoon Teas cost around $50 a person, including tea sandwiches, scones, and pastries. Some seats include a small view of the Alexandria Waterfront, which adds to the experience.

The food was amazing, but the seating area was a bit crowded. It’s the perfect spot for a special treat with friends or family. Put on your best Afternoon Tea dress and romanticize your day!

Pick Flowers at Burnside Farms: Unique Things to Do in Northern Virginia

Depending on the season, you can pick tulips, strawberries, and other fruits at Burnside Farm. Although they have baskets to borrow, you can also bring your own. I loved taking photos of their vintage bicycle and windmill. They even have a kids section. Make sure to check out the local honey and produce in their store. This is the next best thing if you can’t make it to the Netherlands.

It’s also one of the most Instagrammable places in Northern Virginia.

Hiking at Great Falls Park

Hiking in Great Falls is an awesome way to spend a day outdoors. The trails are beautiful, with some offering stunning views of the Potomac River and its powerful waterfalls. One of the most popular trails is the Billy Goat Trail, which is a bit challenging but totally worth it for the amazing scenery.

National Museum of the Marine Corps

The amount of effort into curating the National Museum of the Marine Corps should be studied! It’s a large museum with lots of exhibits. You can see replica armored vehicles, battlefield experiences, and soldiers. I loved the exhibit on military families and the experiences of military spouses and children.

Reflecting on the horrors of war was a bit emotional, but I appreciate the amount of detail they put into this museum.

Watch the Planes at Gravelly Point: Fun Things to Do in Northern Virginia

I love riding my bike to Gravelly Point during warmer months. The best time to visit is right before sunset or in the afternoon. Lots of families have picnics here, and there are also a few food trucks. Most people come to see the planes as it’s right next to Reagen Airport so that you can see planes land. They get extremely low and both kids and adults love it.

George Washington Mount Vernon

Visiting Mount Vernon is like stepping back to learn about George Washington’s life. You can explore his beautiful mansion, walk through the gardens, and see where he lived and worked. The views of the Potomac River are amazing, and plenty of interactive exhibits make history fun and interesting. Don’t forget to check out the museum and the working farm animals! It’s a great place to learn about American history while enjoying the outdoors.
