5+ Things to Do in Clifton: A Unique DC Day Trip

Clifton is a charming small town where visitors can slow down and explore. It’s best for people who enjoy quiet cities where the main source of attraction is Main Street, historic finds, and hiking trails. I took a day trip here and was pleasantly surprised at how welcoming everyone was. If you’re local to Northern Virginia, give this small city a chance.

The History of Clifton Virginia

Plantation owner William E. Beckwith originally owned a large area of land, including present-day Clifton. Beckwith had a relationship with Sophie, a woman enslaved by his Mother.

Sophie and Clifton would go on to have 6 children together. After his mother’s death, he bought Sophie from her estate, and she and the children moved in with him. He still had an active plantation, and one of his sons served as an overseer while others went on to get an education. Once William Beckwith died in 1863, he left 200 acres to those he had enslaved, including his children. His descendants would make Clifton a safe place where African Americans could live and thrive.

Visit the Clifton Primitive Baptist Church

Before learning about Clifton’s history, I was surprised that a historic Black church was on its main road. Clifton Primitive Baptist Church was built in 1871 and remains a critical aspect of Clifton’s history as the oldest African American church in Fairfax County. It often served as the first African American school for children in the area. Its traditional, simple architecture testifies to its early Baptist values and the community it served.

Enjoy Outdoor Seating at Trattoria Villagio

Trattoria Villagio was such a pleasant surprise. It’s a mid-range Italian restaurant in Clifton’s historic district. The outdoor seating transformed small-town Virginia into a beachfront Italian town. I was served freshly baked bread and balsamic vinegar. This picturesque restaurant offers good Italian cuisine. I did find my pasta to be a bit overcooked, but you know how we become overly critical after one trip to Italy 😂. Customer service was good and I would definitely go back to try other items on their menu, such as pizza or antipasti.

Wander Through the Historic District

Delighted to learn more about Clifton’s history, I made my way down the street, reading all of the educational plaques located in front of historic homes. The town’s streets have beautifully preserved buildings, unique shops, and small cafes. It’s the perfect way to soak up local culture while making pit stops for ice cream.

Visit Devereux Station in Clifton

Devereux Station played a critical role during the Civil War, serving as a major supply route for the Union Army. It was used to transport troops and supplies. The station also housed a telegraph office, which Union soldiers used to strategize. Although guarded by Union troops, it witnessed several skirmishes aimed at disrupting Union logistics. Post-war, the railroad continued to drive local economic development, and today, Devereux Station is remembered as a vital part of Clifton’s Civil War history.

Clifton Town Park

If you’re traveling with children, stopping by Clifton Town Park is a must. It’s a small but cute park with a covered gazebo and children’s playground. Feel free to pack a picnic and relax. I personally couldn’t get enough of the kid-size vintage train replicas.

Hike the Bull Run Occoquan Trail

Bull Run Occoquan Trail is an 18-mile trail filled with streams and tall hemlock trees. It was also home to various battles during the Civil War.

It’s bike-friendly if you prefer cycling. Because of all the natural bridges made from fallen trees, it was perfect for taking cottagecore-inspired photos. It was quiet, but I’m unsure I would hike it solo again, as I prefer more busy trails. There’s a winery a short walk away from the trailhead, but unfortunately, they do not offer non-alcoholic wines.

Explore Hemlock Overlook Regional Park

Hemlock Overlook Regional Park is another great spot for outdoor adventure. This park offers hiking, zip-lining, and even rope courses. The trails here provide stunning views of the forest and the river, making it an escape from Washington, DC.

Play a Round at Twin Lakes Golf Course

Golf enthusiasts will enjoy a round at Twin Lakes Golf Course. This well-maintained course offers 36 holes, providing a fun and challenging experience for players of all skill levels. The lush green fairways and peaceful surroundings make for a perfect day on the links.

Clifton may be small, but it’s packed with fun and relaxing activities. Whether you’re exploring little-known historic sites, hiking a trail, or simply enjoying a great meal s, there’s something in Clifton for everyone. Enjoy your visit!
