Looking for fun things to do in Staunton? Recently voted as one of the best small towns in America, Staunton is a must-visit.
I took a road trip from Northern Virginia to Staunton and was happy to experience a slower pace in Virginia’s mountain towns. It’s a laid-back city perfect for those who love theatre, the outdoors, and great coffee.

BEST TIME TO VISIT STAUNTON
It’s always a good time to visit Staunton, and the weather is always beautiful because of its location in the Mountains. The Red Maples and Trees of Heaven in the fall provide gorgeous red and orange foliage. Autumn is also when thousands of Harry Potter and fantasy lovers come to the Queen City Mischief & Magic Festival. Book your hotels early and take photos in your capes and costumes by the Staunton train station to stay true to Hogwarts.
Visiting during the winter guarantees Christmas-worthy snowfall and cozy restaurants. The view of Blackburn Inn during winter belongs on a postcard.
You can’t go wrong visiting Staunton in spring. While hiking, I ate many wild wineberries and saw many blooming flowers such as the Empress Tree, Rose of Sharon, and Virginia’s state flower, dogwood.
During the summer, there are so many activities to choose from. There are gorgeous hiking trails, paddle boarding, and horseback riding.
WHERE TO STAY IN STAUNTON
I recommend staying close to the historical districts. West Beverley Street is in the center of lots of restaurants, attractions, and scenic views of the city. Newtown Historic District is home to beautiful homes and Trinity Episcopal, built in 1855 making it the oldest church in Staunton.
Best Hotels in Staunton: Blackburn Inn + More
Blackburn Inn is one of the oldest hotels in Virginia. It has served as a prison, asylum, and hotel throughout previous centuries. I loved the vintage architecture and the pretty grounds. There’s a magnolia-lined driveway and lots of water fountains.
The rooms are spacious, and the beds are super comfortable. It’s not a party hotel at all. I loved the view from the rooftop during sunrise. Afterward, go to their cafe for hearty American options or drive less than 5 minutes to the historic district.
Hotel 24 is another great option. It is within walking distance of the Shakespeare Theatre and has a pool! The Storefront is a rental with modern decor, also located on Staunton’s most popular street.
TOP THINGS TO DO IN STAUNTON
American Shakespeare Center Blackfriars Playhouse
As a theatre lover, I knew I had to visit Staunton’s American Shakespeare Center Blackfriars Playhouse. What makes this place legendary? It’s a complete recreation of Shakespeare’s original indoor theater! I bought tickets for the 7 p.m. show and showed up a bit early. It was a weekday, so I was surprised at how many people came out.
I was so excited when they asked if I was interested in participating by sitting on the stage, and I agreed. The show was a hilarious depiction of all of Shakespeare’s plays. It was an intimate and interactive experience, and I believe the performer did a phenomenal job. I think it’s a must-visit, but you can also join a tour of the building Monday through Saturday at 10 am and 2 pm.
Go Hiking at Natural Bridge State Park
I first heard of Natural Bridge on social media and I knew I had to visit. It’s one of Virginia’s most famous natural landmarks. It’s 215 feet high and made up of gigantic limestone rock. Some people say that George Washington carved his name under the Natural Bridge. From the entrance stand in the middle of the arch and look up to your right. There’s a white box circling the alleged tag.
The walk to the arch is about a mile and takes 10- 15 minutes from the welcome center. Afterwards you can continue your hike to see Lace waterfall. The waterfall is not the biggest, but it’s a nice walk. I made sure to forage for wineberries while hiking.
Explore Historic Downtown Staunton
Historic Downtown Staunton has antique shops, historical sites, and locally owned restaurants. l enjoyed the architecture and charming small-town feel. Don’t forget to check out the farmers’ market if you’re visiting on a Saturday—it’s a great place to pick up fresh, local produce and handmade crafts.
Things to Do in Staunton: Visit the Woodrow Wilson Presidential Library
One of the most popular museums in Staunton is the Woodrow Wilson Presidential Library and Museum. It is located in Staunton and offers a fascinating look into the life and legacy of the 28th President of the United States. I did a self-guided tour of the museum, which has exhibits focused on his presidency and participation in World War I. Car lovers will love the restoration of his 1919 Pierce-Arrow limousine.
Afterward, I joined a group tour to see inside the house and garden. It costs extra, but it’s worth it. The home is beautiful; you can see enslaved people’s quarters, the kitchen, and Woodrow Wilson’s bedroom. It’s a great educational experience that provides insight into Wilson’s impact on American history
Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello
I’m upset that it took me so long to visit Monticello. Its name is derived from “Little Mountian” in Italian, and it makes sense because it’s located in the mountains with lots of hills. Regular admission comes with access to Monticello and the grounds. You can see Sally Hemings’s room and listen to her story or look at the vintage wine cellars and kitchen.
One of my favorite areas in the estate is the garden that belonged to enslaved people. The view is gorgeous and it was cool to learn about which fruits and vegetables people grew hundreds of years ago. There’s also a replica of the slave quarters, which provides up-close insight into the life and struggles Black Americans faced during the birth of America.
It was shocking to visit the slave quarters and then go directly to the inside of Jefferson’s home. His home is absolutely gorgeous, filled with exotic art, treasures, and furniture. His bedroom was inspired by the French and included two openings that led to his reading room or changing room.
Monticello has many glorious flowers, and you can even go on a garden tour during some seasons.
Visiting plantations can introduce complex emotions, but the current Monticello organization does a decent job of showing all aspects of Thomas Jefferson’s legacy. Unfortunately, they are losing good-quality historians due to their decision to hire a president who has no intentions of keeping the information fair and honest.
Grand Caverns
Grand Caverns, just a short drive from Staunton, is the oldest continuously operating show cave in the United States. Discovered in 1804, these caverns feature impressive rock formations like stalactites and stalagmites. Guided tours take you through the beautifully lit chambers, where you can learn about the geology and history of the caves. It’s a cool (literally, it’s 54 degrees year-round!) adventure that’s fun for the whole family.
Best Restaurants in Staunton Virginia
Staunton boasts some of the best dining experiences in Virginia. For a special night out, try Zynodoa, which serves Southern-inspired cuisine using fresh, local ingredients. Gloria’s Pupuseria is another top spot, known for its amazing Salvadoran food. If you’re looking for something more casual, Byers Street Bistro offers a great selection of sandwiches and burgers. Check out Taste of India or Seed to Tail for my plant-based eaters. Staunton may be a small town but its restaurant scene offers lots of delicious and diverse options.
Gloria’s Pupuseria
Having lunch at Gloria’s Pupuseria was one of the best decisions I made during my trip. I received amazing, quick service, and the food was so good! They have lots of vegan and vegetarian options, including vegan pupusas! I also recommend the tortilla vegetable soup and tamarind fruit juice.
Reunion Bakery
Reunion Bakery is a gem in Staunton, perfect for satisfying your sweet tooth. This boutique bakery offers a variety of freshly baked pastries, sourdough loads, and decadent desserts. From soft cruffins to garlic scape pesto croissants, everything is made with high-quality ingredients and lots of love. It’s a great place to grab coffee while sitting on the outdoor chairs. Most of the staff were friendly and I can tell they have a strong local fanbase.
If you want a more low-key eatery, visit Giancarlo’s Fine European Pastries for mouthwatering cannolis, petit forts, and meringue. They even have baking classes to teach foodies to make delicious desserts with a European flair..
