Whether you’re looking for luxury, family-friendly options or a lively atmosphere, here’s a guide to the best areas to stay in Cape Town.

Looking for a quick answer on the best places to stay in Cape Town? Here are my top picks for hotels in Cape Town:

Where to Stay in Cape Town: A Guide to the Best Neighborhoods

I am biased, but my number one neighborhood recommendation is Camps Bay. It’s within walking distance of the beach and close to Lion’s Head Mountain. It’s one of the richest and safest locations in Cape Town and a short stroll to grocery stores and restaurants. It’s also one of the most expensive places to stay in Cape Town. A few other neighborhoods I love are near the V&A Waterfront, Seapoint, and Constantia.

Camps Bay: Beachfront Luxury and Stunning Views

Camps Bay is one of the most popular areas to stay in Cape Town, and for good reason. Located just a 10-minute drive from the city center, this upscale neighborhood is known for its pristine beach, palm-lined promenade, and stunning views of the Twelve Apostles mountain range. The area is home to some of the city’s most luxurious hotels and villas, making it a top choice for those looking for a high-end experience.

What to Do in Camps Bay: The main draw here is the beach, which is perfect for sunbathing, swimming, and watching the sunset. Camps Bay also boasts a vibrant dining scene, with plenty of beachfront restaurants and cafes offering everything from fresh seafood to international cuisine. If you’re feeling active, you can hike up Lion’s Head for panoramic views of the city and coastline.

Camps Bay is generally considered safe, especially during the day. The area is well-patrolled by private security, and the tourist-friendly atmosphere means you’ll often see families and couples enjoying the beach and restaurants. However, it’s always wise to take standard precautions, such as not leaving valuables unattended on the beach and being aware of your surroundings, especially at night. Do not walk around with expensive items like cameras or phones in your hands late at night.

Gardens

Staying in the Gardens, a charming neighborhood in Cape Town’s City Bowl, offers a perfect blend of urban convenience and natural beauty. Located at the foot of Table Mountain, the Gardens is known for its leafy streets, historic homes, and close proximity to key attractions like the Company’s Garden, Kloof Street’s vibrant dining scene, and the South African National Gallery.

The area is highly walkable, with many shops, cafes, and parks within easy reach, making it ideal for those who prefer exploring on foot. When it comes to safety, the Gardens is generally considered a safe neighborhood, especially during the day. However, like any urban area, it’s wise to stay aware of your surroundings, avoid isolated areas at night, and use well-lit routes when walking after dark. Overall, the Gardens is a central and sensible location for visitors.

Waterfront: Tourist-Friendly and Convenient

The V&A Waterfront is one of Cape Town’s most visited areas, and it’s a great place to stay if you want convenience and plenty of entertainment options. The Waterfront is a large, developed area with a mix of hotels, apartments, and shops, all set against the backdrop of the harbor and Table Mountain.

The V&A Waterfront is packed with things to do, from shopping at high-end boutiques to dining at world-class restaurants. You can also visit the Two Oceans Aquarium, take a boat trip to Robben Island, or simply enjoy a stroll along the waterfront. The area is also home to the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (MOCAA), one of the city’s top cultural attractions.

The V&A Waterfront is one of the safest areas in Cape Town, with a strong security presence and plenty of lighting. It’s a great option for families and solo travelers who want to explore the city with peace of mind. The area is busy from morning until late at night, so you’ll always find people around.

Sea Point: Vibrant and Family-Friendly

Sea Point is a lively, family-friendly neighborhood located along the Atlantic Seaboard, just a short drive from the city center. This area is known for its beautiful promenade, which is popular with joggers, cyclists, and families. Sea Point offers a range of accommodation options, from budget-friendly hotels to luxurious apartments with ocean views.

The Sea Point Promenade is the area’s highlight, offering a scenic route for walking, jogging, or cycling along the coast. The neighborhood also has many parks, playgrounds, and outdoor gyms, making it a great choice for active travelers. You’re also close to the beaches of Clifton and Camps Bay and the shops and restaurants of the nearby Green Point neighborhood.

Sea Point is generally safe, especially during the day. The promenade is a popular spot for both locals and tourists, and the area is well-patrolled. As with any urban area, it’s important to stay aware of your surroundings, especially when walking around at night. Stick to well-lit areas and avoid secluded spots after dark.

Constantia: Tranquil and Luxurious

Constantia is an excellent choice if you’re looking for a more tranquil, luxurious experience. Located about 15 kilometers (9 miles) from the city center, Constantia is Cape Town’s wine country, known for its beautiful vineyards, historic estates, and lush landscapes.

The area offers a peaceful retreat from the city while still within easy reach of major attractions. Constantia is also close to the Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden, one of the most beautiful gardens in the world.

Constantia is a very safe area known for its affluent, residential atmosphere. The wine estates and hotels have strong security measures, and the area is quiet and peaceful. It’s an excellent option for travelers seeking a safe, serene environment.

Safety in Cape Town

Cape Town is a fantastic destination, but like any major city, it’s essential to be mindful of safety. Choose well-established areas with good reviews, and always follow local advice and recommendations. Stick to busy, well-lit streets, and avoid walking alone at night.

If you’re traveling to Cape Town as a solo woman, I believe it’s best to stay at a popular hotel instead of an AirB&B. By taking these precautions, you’ll be able to enjoy all that Cape Town has to offer with confidence.

Whether you’re looking for the beachside luxury of Camps Bay, the convenience of the City Bowl, or the tranquility of Constantia, Cape Town has a range of options to suit every traveler’s needs.
