Looking for epic places to visit in Virginia in Winter? You don’t have to fly to Europe for a winter vacation. Virginia has it all. I’m lucky enough to have done so many road trips in Virginia, so I know all of the best places to visit when winter rolls around. From cozy cabins to mountainous ski resorts, here’s a list of 10+ epic places to visit in Virginia this winter!
Go Snow Tubing at Massanutten Resort
Massanutten Resort is perfect for a family-friendly winter vacation! This might not be your best option if you’re an experienced skier, but it’s great for beginners. Adventure lovers will enjoy the snowboarding and snow tubing opportunities, while wellness lovers would probably spend most of their vacation in the spa.
The resort has over 4 swimming pools, a few restaurants, and an indoor/outdoor waterpark. I wouldn’t describe Massanutten as a luxurious hotel, but its very cozy and my family enjoyed our time here.
Here’s a tip that saved us a lot of money: book your chairlift tickets online in advance. They’re much cheaper than buying in person. Things sell out fast, so you’ll also want to plan ahead.
Wintergreen Resort
Wintergreen Resort is one of the most beautiful places to visit during Winter. In fact, in 2023 it was voted as the #1 Resort in Virignia. This area doesn’t usually receive enough snow to make it a top skiing destination, but it’s still a great vacation spot. They rely on some manmade snow for winter activities such as snowboarding, snow tubing, and skiing.
You’ll want to bring or buy some groceries, as restaurants are limited, and most don’t deliver. Although its about 3 hours from Washington DC, its the perfect low-key break from the city life.
Chincoteague Island on the Eastern Shore
Chincoteague Island is known for its wild ponies, and there’s never a bad time to visit. Chincoteague is less crowded in winter, making it a peaceful and more affordable winter etreat. You can enjoy watching the wild ponies, building a bonfire, or sipping apple cider with your loved ones.
If you’re a birdwatcher, you must bring your binoculars to see King Eiders and Red-throated Loons between September and December.
Humpback Bridge in Covington: Little Switzerland
Would I plan a road trip to see a beautiful vintage bridge? Absolutely!
Humpback Bridge is the oldest covered bridge in Virginia. It’s located in Covington, Virginia, a lovely town with waterfalls, lakes, and lots of small-town charm. Some would even call this area Virginia’s Little Switerzland.
The snow-covered bridge and surrounding area is one of Virginia’s most hidden gems. It’s about 1 hour from Roanoke and 3.5 hours from Washington, DC.
Dickens of a Christmas in Roanoke
If you’re looking for a festive experience, don’t miss Dickens of a Christmas in Roanoke. This annual event feels like starring in your very own Christmas movie. There are community carolers, a holiday parade, and lots of local vendors selling seasonal goodies like roasted nuts, apple cider donuts, and handmade ornatments.
Don’t miss the annual tree lighting and parade. I love all of the Christmas lights and decorations. You can sip hot chocolate, eat some gingerbread cookies, and feel like you’ve entered a Charles Dickens novel.
Stay at the Shenandoah Yurt
For a unique winter getaway, try staying at the Shenandoah Yurt. Yurts origniated in Central Asia and are still used by lots of people in the Mongolian community. For some unknown reason, yurts are one of the most popular vacation homes in Virginia.
Shenandoah Yurt is cozy yurt with a fireplace perfect for marshmallows, a hot tub, and magical views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. It’s an ideal spot for a romantic retreat or a peaceful solo escape. Imagine the views during winter!
Dolphin and Whale Watching in Virginia Beach
Many people don’t realize that you can actually see dolphins and whales in Virginia Beach. It is seasonal, so make sure to reach out before purchasing your ticket. From late December through March, Virginia Beach is one of the best places on the East Coast to see migrating humpback whales. Bundle up, head out on a boat tour, and prepare for a thrilling experience with these magnificent creatures.
Tiny Cabin at Getaway Shenandoah
Booking a trip to the Getaway House has become a seasonal treat to myself. If you’re craving solitude and nature, stay here! These adorable cabins have big windows, a fireplace, and everything you need to unplug and recharge. Make sure to pack some snacks, as the nearest large grocery store is 30+ minutes away.
Warm Springs Pools at The Omni Homestead Resort
The Warm Springs Pools at The Omni Homestead Resort offer a unique way to warm up this winter. These natural mineral springs have been soothing visitors since the 18th century. The pools are nestled in a cozy, rustic bathhouse setting, and the warm water is perfect for a relaxing winter soak.

Grab a cup of coffee and then spend your weekend exploring local museums or people-watching at the waterfront. The Masonic Temple is less than 15 minutes from King Street and provides fascinating insights into America’s most secretive organizations.
Illuminights: Winter Walk of Lights
If you like me and love to see Christmas lights, consider driving to Roanoke for the Illuminights. Visitors will see over 600,00 lights while walking through trails in Explore Park. It’s the perfect destination for people of all ages. There are bonfires for roasting marshmallows, local crafts, and family-friendly activities.
Feel free to bring your dog; it is dog-friendly as long as they are on a leash.
Historic Williamsburg
I think winter is the best time to visit historical Williamsburg. Winter in this charming town feels like a page from a storybook, with seasonal decorations and the smell of roasted nuts everywhere.
Make sure to visit the Governor’s Palace, and enjoy hot cider by the fire at one of the local restaurants. Perfect for history buffs and cottagecore lovers alike!
Visit Monticello: Thomas Jefferson’s Estate
Monticello looks like something out of a fairytale during Winter. Thomas Jefferson’s historical home and plantation make for a great winter destination. I recommend booking a tour of inside his estate and the quarters of the enslaved. Consider spending some time in Charlottesville while you’re in the area.
