Looking for the best things to do? I’ve got you covered.

1. Catalina Island, California

As an East Coast girl, Catalina Island feels like a hidden gem. We all know about Los Angeles and San Francisco, but Catalina Island is a more romantic getaway. The average temperature in Catalina Island during December is usually 65 degrees.

Catalina Island has a very European beach town feel. It’s filled with beachfront restaurants, diving centers, and cute bed and breakfasts. You will take the Catalina Express ferry from the mainland of Southern California to get there. I recommend booking your tickets in advance, as they sell out fast.

Your options for things to do are endless. If you prefer to live the beach bum lifestyle, I recommend visiting Descanso Beach Club. It’s a popular lounge, perfect for sun tanning on the beach or reading a book under a cabana. If you’re a water lover, you have to go scuba diving or do one of their clear-bottom boat tours. Catalina Island Museum is another great option, especially if you love learning about local history.

Most of the housing options on Catalina Island are owned by local families. I recommend staying at Hotel Mac Rae because most of its rooms have great views. If you want to splurge, check out this gorgeous villa in one of the best parts of the city.

2. South Padre Island, Texas

South Padre Island is Miami’s calmer cousin. In December, the weather stays around 70°F. It’s a very family-friendly destination. Some of the most popular attractions are the SpaceX South Texas Launch site and the South Padre Island Adventure Park, where you can go ziplining.

Hotels and AirBnBs I recommend in South Padre Island:

3. White Sands, New Mexico

White Sands is another one of those places in the United States that feels out of this world. Although it’s a desert, the average temperature is 60°F in December. If you visit, consider shooing your flying dress photos. The dazzling white sand dunes create a fairytale-like setting, perfect for sledding.

Where to Stay in White Sands

Honestly, other than the sand dunes, there’s not much to do in the area. It’s best combined with another Arizona city like Bisbee. The hotel options are limited and you will definitely need to rent a car.

4. Bisbee, Arizona

It would be best if you combined Bisbee with White Sands. Bisbee’s average temperature is 60°F in December. It’s a quirky place ideal for history and art lovers. It’s also home to one of the largest producers of copper. They also produce large amounts of gold, copper, and silver.

One of the most popular things to do is visit the Copper Queen Mine. You also need to see the  Old Bisbee Ghost Tour. History lovers will love the Bisbee Mining and Historical Museum, while outdoor lovers will be amazed at the beautiful Lavender Pit.

5. San Diego, California

San Diego has great weather all year round, with December highs of 65°F. It’s laid-back, but there’s plenty to do. Spend the day exploring Balboa Park’s museums and gardens, or head to La Jolla Cove for kayaking and seal-watching. You may even see some squids if you’re into cold water scuba diving.

For the best views, visit Sunset Cliffs. If you have extra time, visit Coronado Island, a quaint beach town.

6. Crystal River, Florida

As a water baby, Crystal River is one of the most magical places in America. Temperatures usually stay in the low 70s during December. The warm water attracts manatees, making it the best location to swim with these cuties in the region. Three Sisters Springs, Blue Spring State Park, and Weeki Wachee Springs State Park are the best places to see these gentle sea creatures. But remember not to touch them 🙂

The water is crystal clear and less than two hours from most major airports, making it totally possible to combine with cities like Orlando or Tampa. You can also learn a lot about Native American history at the Crystal River Archaeological State Park.

It’s best to rent a car for this area, as you’ll probably be doing a bit of driving each spring. Hotels are limited, but there are a few Airbnb options.

7. Honolulu, Hawaii

If you’re craving the tropics and something new, consider Honolulu, Hawaii. With highs of 80°F, its perfect for beach lovers who rather sunbathe and take surfing classes. Waikiki Beach is a must visit but if you’re feeling adventurous, take a hike up Diamond Head for stunning island views.

Hotels in Honolulu I recommend:

8. Page, Arizona

Page isn’t super hot during December. It usually averages around 50°F but you’ll definitely work up a sweat exploring some the area’s most stunning natural wonders such a Horseshoe Bend or Antelope Canyon.

9. Miami, Florida

Now this is an easy one! Miami is one of the most popular winter destinations in the USA. The weather is perfect and there’s always something to do.

As a coffee and purse lover, I highly recommend visiting the Dior Cafe. If you prefer a more low-key spot, check out i think she is. It’s a cozy cafe with cute decor and an even cuter name.

A few fun things to do in Miami:

  • Everglades Tour
  • Little Havana Food and Walking Tour
  • Day Trip to Key West
