Looking to cool off at some waterfalls near Pittsburg? As an avid waterfall chaser, I’ve got the perfect list for you. Not only do these waterfalls have amazing views, but some of them are also swimmable.

Pittsburgh might be known for its steel history and pierogis, but it’s just a short drive from many gorgeous waterfalls.

1. Ohiopyle Falls

Just an hour and a half drive from Pittsburgh, Ohiopyle State Park is home to the stunning Ohiopyle Falls. This is the perfect spot for a day trip with family or friends. The falls are right in the heart of the park, making them easily accessible. Plus, the Youghiogheny River’s dramatic drop over the rocks creates a spectacular view when it’s sunny. While there, don’t miss out on the park’s many hiking trails and white-water rafting opportunities.

2. Cucumber Falls

Cucumber Falls is a great example of Pennsylvania’s natural beauty. Also located in Ohiopyle State Park, Cucumber Falls is just a short hike from the parking area. This 30-foot waterfall is picturesque, especially in the spring and fall when the flow is at its peak. The surrounding greenery and the serene atmosphere make it a perfect spot for a picnic or mediation.

3. Buttermilk Falls

Head northeast of Pittsburgh, and in about an hour, you’ll reach Buttermilk Falls Natural Area in Beaver Falls. This waterfall is a bit off the beaten path but worth the trek. The short hike to the falls is pretty easy, making it a great spot for families. The waterfall cascades over a rocky cliff, creating a curtain of water that you can actually walk behind. It’s one of the most magical spots near Pittsburg.

If you’re up for a little road trip, this could be a fantastic weekend adventure.

Nearby, you can also explore the remnants of an old iron furnace, adding a touch of history to your nature outing.

7. Quakertown Falls

Located near New Castle, PA, Quakertown Falls is about an hour’s drive from Pittsburgh. This (not-so) hidden gem isn’t as well-marked as others. However, the 50-foot cascade makes the hike worth it. It’s perfect for those who love exploring and don’t mind getting their shoes dirty.
