1. Lake Tahoe
Everyone has heard of summers in Lake Tahoe, but what about Autumn? Hope Valley, Carson Pass, and Woodfords are the best cities to visit because that’s where most of the aspen groves are. The best foliage can be found surrounding the lake. Bring your kayak to explore the lake’s perimeter or hike on the Tahoe Rim Trail for the best views.
The cooler autumn temperatures make outdoor activities like hiking and biking even more enjoyable, and the quieter atmosphere offers a peaceful retreat before the snow falls. The best time to visit is late September and early October.
2. Harpers Ferry, West Virginia
Harpers Ferry is such a charming city on the east coast. There’s a lot of history, natural wonder, and a sense of nostalgia here. I’ve hiked a few trails here, but my favorite is the Maryland Heights Trail, where three states meet. If hiking isn’t your thing, you can explore one of the many museums or historic sights. The area has many restaurants and ice cream shops, making it perfect for families. Harpers Ferry has some of the region’s most breathtaking views of fall foliage. This is one of your best bets for a short weekend escape near DC. To read more about Harpers Ferry, check out my post.
3. The Green Mountains, Vermont
If you haven’t done a New England Fall foliage road trip, you should really consider it. Vermont is so often overlooked, but it’s a beautiful state. The Green Mountains turn into a golden orange and red oasis. I recommend staying in a cozy cabin with a fireplace and hot tub or glamping. Throughout your stay, explore small towns like Stowe or Woodstock. Whether you enjoy hiking, biking, or simply admiring the views, Vermont is the quintessential autumn destination.
4. The Berkshires, Massachusetts
The Berkshires are known for its beauty and elegance. Fall foliage usually peaks in mid-October, but always check local forecasts. If you love hiking, you will be spoiled with options. I recommend checking out October Mountain, Pittsfield State Forest, or Mt Greylock. If you prefer chasing waterfalls, take a hike to Bash-Bish falls.
Don’t leave without trying some hot chocolate or coffee at one of the popular cafes in the Berkshires like Chocolate Springs Cafe or Gould Farm’s Roadside Store and Cafe.
5. Cape Cod, Massachusetts
Cape Cod is a popular summer destination, but fall provides a quieter and more affordable vacation. The best time to view the fall foliage is late October to November. There are fewer crowds, but you can still take a stroll along the beach and enjoy fresh seafood. During the fall, lots of restaurants offer in-season clams, sea scallops, and hake.
For the best foliage, visit the Murkwood Conservation Area or Lowell Holly Reservation. Both offer beautiful views of the trees.
6. Eureka Springs, Arkansas
The best time to see the fall foliage in Eureka Springs is late October to early November. This mountain town is located in the Ozark Mountains. Famous for its natural beauty and hot springs, there’s no wonder why it has been voted as one of the best places in the US to visit during fall. The town is known for its eccentric shops, hikes, and art galleries. The architecture, which combines rustic beauty with Victorian charm, amazed me.
If you’re an adventure junkie, go ziplining at Eureka Springs Zipline or explore the caves at Grotto Cave and Springs. If you love Halloween and scary stories, book a Ghost tour at the 1886 Crescent Hotel, considered one of America’s most haunted hotels.
7. New Orleans, Louisiana
Can you imagine eating beignets while sipping on New Orleans hickory coffee? I don’t think New Orleans receives enough attention as a fall destination. The weather is usually much warmer than the East Coast, and there’s so much to do.
If you love ghost stories and good food, you need to visit. There are also festivals, live music, and plenty of historical sites. In October, the French Quarter is quite popular with Halloween enthusiasts.
8. Lake Coeur d’Alene, Idaho
Lake Coeur d’Alene is an underrated gem in the fall for a peaceful weekend surrounded by nature. The lake is surrounded by forested hills that transform into a canvas of fiery colors. Whether you’re into hiking, biking, or boating, this spot offers a tranquil, scenic escape.
9. Amicalola Falls State Park, Georgia
Located in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains, Amicalola Falls State Park offers one of the best waterfall hikes in the Southeast. The 729-foot waterfall is a breathtaking sight, especially when surrounded by the warm hues of autumn. Perfect for nature lovers, you can camp or stay at the park’s lodge and enjoy a full weekend of outdoor adventures.
10. The Catskills, New York
As a New York native, I remember visiting the Catskills during the fall. It’s a short drive from New York City and filled with gorgeous mountains, small towns, and endless outdoor activities. Whether you’re looking to hike, fish, or explore cute villages like Woodstock, this region offers a perfect blend of relaxation and adventure. The scenic drives and rustic charm make the Catskills an ideal fall weekend getaway.
11. Aspen, Colorado
Some only visit Aspen during the winter, and they miss out. Aspen is breathtaking in the fall when the aspen trees turn a brilliant golden color. The snow-capped peaks and crisp mountain air make for an unforgettable backdrop. Take a scenic drive along Independence Pass, or enjoy early-season hiking and cycling before winter sets in.
Washington, DC
DC is a great fall weekend trip if you love a mix of urban life and nature. Explore the city’s historic monuments, framed by vibrant fall colors and trees. Stroll through the National Mall or take a scenic walk around the Tidal Basin, where the foliage reflects beautifully off the water. Beyond the natural beauty, you can explore free museums, quaint cafes, and festivals.
Conclusion
From the cultural gems of Washington, DC, and New Orleans to the quiet mountain retreats in Vermont, Colorado, and Arkansas, the U.S. offers countless ways to enjoy fall. Whether you’re seeking vibrant foliage, outdoor adventures, or a relaxing weekend in a quaint town, these destinations provide the perfect autumn escape.
